Anthony Lavers read law at University College, London (Joseph Hellyer Prize 1977) and the University of Southampton and taught it at the University of Portsmouth and the National University of Singapore, where he obtained his Ph.D for a thesis on professional liability in the construction and property-related professions. After a year as Visiting Scholar at Wolfson College, Cambridge, he took up a senior post at Oxford Brookes University where he was successively Reader and Professor of Law. He also taught on the Legal Practice Course at the Oxford Institute of Legal Practice. He was given a Visiting Chair in Law by Oxford Brookes when he left the University in 2001 and a Visiting Chair in Law by the University of Portsmouth in 2008. He was awarded a D.Litt by Portsmouth in 2006 for "published work of high distinction".
Anthony Lavers has been a Member of Council of the Society of Construction Law since 1996 and was Vice-Chairman (2002-2004) and Chairman (2004-2006). He also chairs the SCL Hudson Prize Judging Panel. He was Co-ordinator of the Commission on Post-Construction Liability and Insurance of the International Council for Building Research 1995-2001 and edited the Commission's 19-country comparative study on post-construction liability which received a Commendation at the Chartered Institute of Builders Literary Awards. He has over 80 other publications, including Construction Law in Singapore and Malaysia (Butterworths, Asia) and Expert Witness in the RICS Case in Point series, and recently co-authored FIDIC Contracts Law and Practice (Informa 2009). Professor Lavers has given seminars and conference papers in 25 countries worldwide, including recent presentations to the European Society of Construction Law in Stockholm, Prague, Athens and Amsterdam.
During his time as an academic, Anthony Lavers was Consultant to Fishburn Boxer (1989-93) and to the Construction Group at Barlow Lyde & Gilbert (1996-2001). A barrister, (Lincoln's, 1997), since 2001 he has divided his time between the London office of US law firm White & Case, where he is Counsel in the Construction & Engineering Practice Group, and his role at Keating Chambers. His work at White & Case involves training, writing and professional development; he has also assisted in research on construction matters relating to projects in Algeria, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Indonesia, Kuwait, Lesotho, Northern Ireland, Oman, Peru, Qatar, Rumania, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. Anthony Lavers, who qualified as a Chartered Surveyor in 2001, was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS) in 2008.
